How Blessed Are You?
In today’s Gospel, Jesus goes up the mountain to teach his disciples the eight Beatitudes also known as the Sermon on the Mountain. The word Beatitude comes from the Latin beatis, meaning, blessed or happy. In proclaiming the beatitudes, Jesus presents the requirements and the reward for true Christian living such as being poor in spirit, mourning for the sinfulness of the world, being meek, hungering and thirsting for righteousness, being merciful, being pure of heart, being a peacemaker, and being persecuted for righteousness. The Blessedness belongs only to those who fulfil these requirements.
The Beatitudes could be seen as a summary of the law and all prophecies by Christ, the law giver, high priest, and the fulfilment of all prophecies. He says, “Do not think that I have come to abolish Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” (Matthew 5:17)
Moses came down the mountain with the ten commandments. But Jesus went up the mountain to teach the Beatitudes. The mountain signifies a higher standard that Christ the law giver is setting in the New testament. He says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” (Jn 13:34). The Beatitudes summarize the requirements of Christian Love. “Beatitude … is a possession of all things held to be good, from which nothing is absent that a good desire may want.” (St. Gregory of Nyssa)
The Pastoral Council Election will be held February 18/19 at ALL Masses. Please read the candidates bios and choose 6 to vote for.
Brothers and sisters,
As we prepare for our Town Hall Meeting this weekend, I thank the Lord for the special gift of another year. I also wish to share with you some of the plans we have for our great parish this year. I would like to hear your suggestions and contributions on these issues. This year, by God’s grace, we intend to:
· Strengthen Spiritual Formation in the parish by training and encouraging small group leaders to encourage participation and service.
· Carry out infrastructure development to enhance our worship experience.
· Encourage more generous giving through the Increased Offertory Program
I thank the Lord immensely for your love and commitment to our great parish – Holy Family. Thank you for your generous giving to the Encountering Christ Campaign and the Catholic Services Appeal (CSA). I wish to appeal to those who are yet to make their 2022 CSA contribution to please do. There is still time.
My prayer for all of us this year is that the Lord will increase our Faith, strengthen our Hope, and renew our Love for him and his Church. “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” (2 Cor 13:14)
Blessings!
